Information governance the focus in EEA2023 conference presentation

At the Electricity Engineers’ Association Conference held during June 2023 in Ōtautahi Christchurch, Asset Dynamics’ Jules Congalton presented on the vital importance of information governance for infrastructure asset management.

Entitled “Information Governance - the Missing Linked in Asset Management”, the presentation interpreted the four asset management fundamentals defined in ISO 55000 — value, alignment, leadership, assurance — in the context of asset information governance.

The critical role of information governance in a modern asset management system was outlined, showing that an organisation realising value from data and information assets is an essential precursor to realising value from physical assets.

A practical methodology to apply the asset management fundamentals to enhance data quality was described. The concept of data health was introduced as a way of measuring how well an organisation’s data supports its overall objectives, based upon six key data quality dimensions defined by the Data Administration Management Association in the Data Management Body of Knowledge.

Three case studies of the information governance methodology delivering business benefits were presented: enablement of decarbonisation and electrification, implementation of a digitalisation strategy, and managing down risks to public safety.

The presentation was attended by over 100 delegates from across the electricity supply industry.
